Maybe I should have told the artist that drew my priestess of Sarenrae ([link]) to draw her with curves like Alissariel's.
As far as getting what you hoped for, I think a big part of that is knowing what you want and being able to convey it to the artist. Even before I saw Ruloc's generous offer, I'd already spent a looong time scouring the Internet for models I could use as photo-references. When I finally did see Ruloc's offer, it took me at least 4 hours to get all the details written up. In fact, I was actually worried it was going to be too much information, so I made an addendum to specifically call attentions to key features like her having blonde eyebrows, no dimple in the chin, and a widow's peak to her hairline.
Naturally, it also helps to find an artist whose style is a good fit for what you have in mind and who will work with those guidelines.

I agree with you about references. I try to provide as many references to what I want as possible and as much detail as can think of that is relevant. However, I never went as in much detail as your link.
(Don't worry, I doubt Eric will go into as much detail as I did!) ^_^;
I need to get on Ruloc's list for he keeps turning me down when I suggest I should commission him when I respond to his fantasy characters pictures here on dA.
Also, if you use the Pathfinder rules for your fantasy games, I have created a generic fillable character sheet for it that I use for my games, which can be found here ([link]). I plan to expand on them next year, so if you find then useful and have any suggestions to make them better while still keeping their generic nature, send your feedback to my email address listed on it.
